Girls Shorts - New Look For 2005

Hereford girls shorts will have a new look starting in the spring of 2005. Based on community input from a survey conducted this fall, the girls lacrosse board approved a change from the flowered shorts to mesh shorts, which are similar to the boys lacrosse shorts. Popular reasons included comfort, fit, and style. The uniform order contained in the registration forms package has sizing and pricing information. |
Girls Shorts Survey
A survey is being conducted to solicit feedback on whether or not the Girls lacrosse program should change the style of shorts. All active girls players with current email addresses should have received an invitation to take the survey. View up-to-date results of the survey.
Girls Goggles Update - October 2004
Starting this indoor season, all players must wear protective eyewear that meets ASTM standards. See US Lacrosse announcement, and eye wear update for more information.
In order to assist with this transition, Hereford Lacrosse will be making goggles available at discounted rates. There will be 2 models to choose from, each available for $10.00:
- STX 4 sight, a compact, low profile wire frame, worn by top college teams including Princeton, Georgetown, Duke, Loyola, Johns Hopkins, and Towson.
- Leader LAXVision, a polycarbonate goggle which can worn over eyeglasses.
Goggles will also be available to players for the 2005 outdoor season. However, the $10.00 price is a special 2004/2005 offer. Limit 1 pair per player, and quantities are limited.
Hereford Rec Council Launches New Web Site
The Hereford Rec Council has launched a new web site, http://herefordrec.org, bringing together information from various programs and members of HRC, including Football, Lacrosse, Basketball, Travel Soccer, and Men's Tennis. You'll also find links to news and information regarding Fifth District, Seventh District, and Prettyboy Recreation councils, including news about the October 31st merge of Sparks, Fifth, and HRC into the Hereford Zone Recreation & Parks Council (HZRPC).

Positive Coaching Alliance - "Double-Goal Coach Workshop"
Thursday night, Feb 19th, 75+ coaches from St. James Lacrosse, Hereford High School Football, Prettyboy Soccer, Hereford Baseball, and Hereford Lacrosse programs attended a Positive Coaching Alliance "Double-Goal" coach workshop, held in the Hereford High school cafeteria, conducted by PCA representative Bobby Moran. Coaches received a hands-on workbook, and learned through presentation and group discussion the cornerstones of the double-goal coaching model... that winning is important, but teaching life lessons is more important. Creating a positive team culture, honoring the game, and filling player's "emotional tanks" was discussed.
The workbook contains Positive Coaching Scripts to help coaches introduce positive coaching principles to their teams. Sample letters to the parents, sample parent meeting agendas, effort goals, and the role of the team's "culture keeper" are also included. Extra copies of the workbook are available. Please send email requesting PCA Double Goal Coach workshop book, or contact Chris Green or Marilyn Darcangelo. Special thanks to them both for helping bring this program to the Hereford community!

Walk-in registration for indoor lacrosse will be held Thursday, September 2nd from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at Hereford Middle School. Forms are available on the registration page.

Protective Eyewear Mandated For Women's Lacrosse In 2005

(From US Lacrosse web site) "The US Lacrosse Women’s Division Board of Governors has voted to amend the rules of women’s lacrosse to highly recommend the use of protective eyewear meeting current ASTM lacrosse standards for 2004 and to mandate its use beginning in 2005." Annual Bullroast - Saturday, May 8th
Mark your calanders now for the annual Hereford Lacrosse Bull and Oyster Roast fundraiser. This year's music will be provided by Release, "Maryland's Premier Eclectic Band". A review of their song list (available on their web site), reveals such diversity from T-Rex to Willie Nelson, from Elvis Presley to Pearl Jam, and lots in between! Sounds like a lot of fun! Along with the music, there will be great food, wheels of chance, a silent auction, and of course, the team baskets auction.

Hereford Girls Will NOT Be Required To Wear Goggles This Spring Season
However, Hereford Lacrosse, in accordance with US Lacrosse, highly recommends the use of protective eyewear meeting current ASTM lacrosse standards for 2004. Parents should exercise their discretion to purchase and require their child to wear goggles that are currently on the market.
The Hereford Lacrosse program is still committed to purchasing the goggles to provide the players a substantial reduction in their cost. Details are being worked out, and will be communicated via the web site when determined.

PCA Workshop Scheduled on 2/19/2004 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM in HHS Cafeteria

In conjunction with this meeting, a Hereford Lacrosse Program coaches meeting will follow from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. Please mark this event on your calendars. Attendance of all Hereford Lacrosse officers, coordinators, coaches and assistant coaches is mandatory. I recommend that all designated "team parent" volunteers also attend. At a minimum, there should be four attendees per lacrosse team: 1 coach, 2 assistant coaches and 1 team parent. - WKIII Although sponsored by the Hereford Lacrosse Program, this workshop is open to coordinators, coaches and teachers from all recreation, middle and high school sports in our area. Accordingly, please pass this invitation along to all of our lacrosse program volunteers, and to any other potential attendees in the "Hereford zone" and neighboring programs. So if you are planning on attending the PCA Workshop, please contact Walter Koppelman at your earliest convenience with your name, phone number, program name and role in your program. "This workshop provides coaches of all sports with tools they can use to become "double-goal" coaches (coaches who want to both win AND develop the character of their players). Evaluation Inclement Weather

Carroll Indoor Sports Center is open. Note schedule by playing level:
- Juniors, age 13-14, CANCELLED
- Midget, age 11-12. 7:00 - 9:00 - Currently still on.
- Lightning, age 9-10. 5:00 - 7:00 - Currently still on.
Parents: use your own discretion.
In the event of snow or inclement weather, Carroll Indoor monitors snow emergency plan announcements to determine if they will be open or closed during evening hours. If a snow emergency plan is in affect at 2:00 pm, they will post a notice on their website indicating that they will be closed. They do not use morning school closings as an indicator since weather can change mid-day.Walter Koppelman III Is New LAX Commissioner
12/05/2003; Walter Koppelman accepted the position of commissioner for the Hereford Lacrosse program at last Thursday night's (12/04) meeting. The meeting was attended by LAX board members, coaches, parents, and the Hereford Rec Council president. Walter has been involved with the program for five years, coaching boys teams both indoor and outdoor, and most recently serving as Assistant Outdoor Commissioner for the boy's program. Efforts are underway to find a replacement for Assistant Outdoor Commissioner. Anyone interested in that position can express their interest via email to web@herefordlacrosse.org. Also discussed was the transition of Marilyn Darcangelo to serve as Assistant Outdoor Commissioner for the girl's lacrosse program, although a time frame for that transition was not concluded, and will be coordinated with the current girl's commissioner, Chris Green.
We wish Walter the best in this new position, and thank everyone who attended the meeting and/or provided input via email prior to the meeting. The next meeting will be held in the 2nd week of January, 2004. Agenda items will include more discussion of the Positive Coaching Alliance, fair playing time, and the evaluations for 2004 outdoor season. Walter has set the tone for his term by stating that "this is Little League Lacrosse for the kids and everyone needs to keep that in mind."
